NEWAG diesel locomotive type 6Dg. Modernization of the SM42.

The NEWAG 6Dg locomotive is a deep modernization of the SM42 (6D) locomotive. The SM42 locomotive was very successful and popular in Poland. In the period 1963 - 1992, 1,822 SM42 locomotives were built in total and are still in operation (2021). They are operated both in companies formed from PKP and in private companies, as well as in company railways. However, time is relentlessly passing and these locomotives are technically obsolete.

Therefore, at NEWAG in Nowy Sącz, they are modernized to the 6Dg type. As part of the modernization, from the old SM42 (6D) locomotive, only the mainstay, bogies with engines and fuel tanks remained. These elements are subject to general renovation. A new locomotive body is built. The locomotive received a new power generator. A new American C27 Caterpillar diesel engine with a capacity of 708 kW (962 hp) is installed. The engine is 12-cylinder, V-shaped. The engine, through a flexible clutch, moves the main and auxiliary generators. The generators become synchronous. The power generator is equipped with an engine and charge air cooler as well as an air intake and exhaust system. Microprocessor control and diagnostics of the locomotive were used. The 6Dg locomotives were equipped with a new braking system. Auxiliary drives (traction motor fan drive and compressor drive) are provided by asynchronous motors supplied from the auxiliary generator through inverters. The power supply to the traction motors is provided by a traction generator through a diode set of rectifiers. The 6Dg locomotive has a microprocessor control. There is a monitor with locomotive diagnostics on the driver's panel. LSa 430 traction motors are supplied from the main synchronous generator via a diode rectifier.

For the 6Dg locomotive, a completely new driver's cab was designed, equipped with two ergonomic separate driver's stands, for driving forward and backward. The stands are equipped with comfortable seats for the driver. The control panels are similar to those in the new locomotives. Thanks to the low hood of the locomotive, visibility from the cabin is very good, and the cabin has panoramic windows. The cabin is heated and air-conditioned. The cabin can be equipped with a cupboard, sink, refrigerator and microwave. The entrance to the cabin is provided by the door accessed from the platform around the locomotive. The cabin is 30% larger than the old one.
