In the 1970s, in the Warsaw Pact, increasingly heavier tanks and other armored vehicles began to be developed for the army. It turned out that they weighed more than 60,000 kg and there were no wagons to transport them. The basic military wagon was the 401Z type wagon, intended for transporting heavy vehicles, for example tanks, which is why it was popularly called a tank wagon. The wagon was developed in 1960 by the Central Design Office of the Rolling Stock Industry for civilian and military use. The wagon consists of two two-axle bogies, a stand, which is a platform, and low sides. The wagon is designed to load goods weighing up to 60,000 kg. Production of type 401Z wagons lasted from 1961 to 1973. A total of 8,280 units were built.

T-T data of the 401Z wagon:

Total length 12.24 m. Empty weight 19,500 kg. Payload: 60,000 kg. O-GP SAB + parking brakes. Two 1XT or 1XTa trolleys. Design speed 100 km/h.

Wagon type 622Za Samms.

It was necessary to develop a railway platform wagon with a longer length and, above all, a greater load capacity. Six-axle wagon type 622Za Samms; The platform is designed to transport heavy concentrated loads, very heavy vehicles and long goods. The wagon was equipped with two 3-axle bogies. It is equipped with stanchions and hinged front sides.

The 622Za type design, Samms letter series, was developed in 1983 by Konstal in Chorzów, produced in the period 1984-1987. Approximately 1,842 examples were built. Konstal is a company in Chorzów that produces trams, metro trains, wagons and bridge structures. Since 1997, the company has been part of the Alstom concern.

T-T data of the type 622Za Samms wagon:

Length 16.24 m. Height with stanchions 2.97 m. Empty weight 29,600 kg. Cargo weight up to 90,000 kg. Number of bogies 2, each with 3 axles. Wheelbase in the trolley 1.60 m. Spacing of the steering pins 9.80 m. Load length up to 15.00 m. Platform area 45.90 square m. Width 3.06 m. Floor height 1.27 m. Minimum curve radius 85 m. Maximum speed 100 km/h. Rail width 1,435 mm.

Additionally, loading troughs with a load capacity of up to 35,000 kg were built for the wagons, for the transport of sheet metal in coils, with a width of 1.00 m - 2.89 m and a diameter of 1.00 m - 2.25 m. Similar wagons were developed and built in the GDR. These wagons were produced for the GDR and CCCP.
