The Ty51 steam locomotive was created as a result of the growing demand for heavy freight locomotives. These locomotives were modeled on the design of the American Ty246 series locomotive, which was purchased in the USA in 1946 as part of the steam locomotive delivery program for European railways.

The locomotive received a timing with Trofimov sliders, instead of Nicolay sliders. The structure of the heater in the boiler has been changed. The grate area was increased. A stoker was used to feed the coal. During operation, the boiler did not show the phenomenon of "boiler exhaustion".

232 Ty51 locomotives were built. The last one was the Ty51-226 steam locomotive. 208 Ty51 locomotives were handed over to PKP, and the rest went to the company's railways. Production ended in 1958. Due to the high axle load, all locomotives worked on the main routes. The main route was Silesia - Ports, where the Ty51 steam locomotives worked together with the American Ty246. The delivery of the ST43 (Romania) and ST44 (CCCP) diesel locomotives and the electrification of railway routes resulted in the Ty51 locomotives being transferred to other works. Ty51 trains even carried heavy passenger trains. By the early 1980s, most Ty51 steam locomotives were jobless. They were directed to the slopes. In 1988, there were numerous cancellations of Ty51 steam locomotives.

The Ty51 steam locomotive was to be developed as the Ty55 steam locomotive. The project was carried out to work on the technical and executive documentation. A prototype of the locomotive was not built.

Until now (2022) about 12 Ty51 steam locomotives have been preserved, which are in various technical conditions. There are two steam locomotives in the Chabówka open-air museum, as exhibits: Ty51-137 tender 27D51-137 and Ty51-182 tender 27D51-182. There is a Ty51-223 steam locomotive in the Wolsztyn open-air museum.
