The entire program of modernization of the railway line between Kraków Główny - Kraków Płaszów stations is part of the investment in the modernization of the international railway route E30. The work includes several smaller projects. The most spectacular are; construction of a triple bridge over the Vistula River, with four tracks, a pavement for cyclists and a pavement for pedestrians, and complete reconstruction of the historic railway viaduct over Grzegórzecka Street. But it also involves the construction of flyovers and reconstruction of the remaining flyovers. As part of the modernization, a new Grzegórzki passenger stop was built in front of Hala Targowa, which should not be confused with the former Grzegórzki railway station, which existed between the Vistula River and the "Szatkowski - Zieleniewski" factory, where today (2022) is the Kazimierz Shopping Center.

Construction works started in 2017. The priority was to maintain one railroad track throughout the duration of the work. Work began on several sections at the same time. As the cross-city line will have four tracks instead of two tracks, the railway line has been widened to the east.
