On August 25-26, 2018, another 16th edition of the Air Show took place in Radom. The site was the Radom Sadków Airport, belonging to the 4th Aviation Wing of the Polish Air Force, and the host was the 42nd Air Training Base (name from 1 January 2011). Previously, there was the 2nd Aviation Training Center and the 1st Airport Headquarters here, which were the heirs of the 60th School Regiment. Currently, the PZL-130 Orlik and PZL M-28 Bryza planes are based mainly on the Sadków Airport. Training courses for multi-role planes and transport planes are implemented here. The airport is the seat of the "Orlik" aerobatic team. The joint user of the Sadków Airport is Radom Airport, which has its own terminal here.
Since 2005, Air Show Radom has been held every two years, so in odd years. Since 2018 is a special year, not only for Polish Aviation, but also for the Republic of Poland, it was planned to cancel the 2017 edition. Only thanks to the Minister of National Defense, Antoni Macierewicz, the event took place in 2017 and another one in 2018.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of regaining independence by the Republic of Poland and the 100th anniversary of Polish Aviation, many events were held in Poland to commemorate these events. The central celebrations on the occasion of the Polish Aviation are: Parade in Warsaw on August 15, 2018 (Wednesday). Celebrations in Dęblin on August 23-24, 2018 (Thursday-Friday). Air Show in Radom on August 25-26, 2018 (Saturday-Sunday). Celebrations at the former airport - Pole Mokotowskie on August 28, 2018 (Tuesday).
Air Show Radom 2018 was organized on a grand scale. Participation was announced: 22 countries, 13 aerobatic teams, a dozen soloists, over 150 aircraft, over 200 aviators, over 20 hours of flight demonstrations, about 40 aircraft at the static exhibition. For the first time in Radom there were representatives of Jordan and Pakistan. The organizers of the show were: the Air Force Command, the City of Radom, Radom Airport, the Air Force and the Polish Aero Club, and under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda.
Tickets for Air Show Radom could be purchased online in the e-Bilet service. The prices were as follows: Normal one-day PLN 40, Discount one-day PLN 25, Collector's PLN 160 (in the scene T-shirt, coin, cap, lanyard and badge), Group PLN 35 (for groups over 20 people), available by e-mail at the order @ ebilet. pl. There were also discounts for people with a Large Family Card (PLN 10 each). Children under 6 admission free. The authorities of the City of Radom provided additional public transport. Additional city car parks were organized. Parking spaces on private properties were also provided by their owners, for the price of PLN 20 per day. There were four entrances to the airport.
The organizers had a big problem, because not everyone willing to participate in the Radom Air Show took part in the event. The airport turned out to be too small and the show time was too short. Already in March 2018, there were no places in hotels in Radom. During the event, the nearest hotel with vacancies was in Kozienice.
On Saturday (August 25, 2018), about 80,000 viewers watched the shows. There were around 50,000 spectators on Sunday. On August 25, 2018, the weather thwarted some plans for the organizers. Nevertheless, 95% of the shows were realized. There was no possibility of demonstrating parachute jumpers, motor paragliders and hot air balloons. Several points had to be postponed. On Sunday (August 26, 2018), as forecasted by weather forecasters, the weather was even worse. At 08:00 the temperature was 9 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature did not exceed 16 degrees Celsius. Due to heavy clouds, strong wind and rain, some of the program's points were canceled, and the schedule of some shows had to be changed. In the air, the "Flying Dragons Team" team did not perform on moto-paragliders. The band has an excellent nightly program.
The attraction of the shows, which not everyone noticed, was the first team show of four Leonardo M-346 Bielik aircraft of the Polish Air Force from Dęblin.
Another attraction was the newly renovated PZL P.11 C fighter plane, the only one in the world. The plane is owned by the Polish Aviation Museum in Krakow. The plane in Radom made a taxi. Theoretically, the plane could make a normal flight. But it is such a valuable exhibit that we must not take any chances. Perhaps a flying replica will be created, just like the RWD-5 R (replica).
Aviation teams.
The highlight of the shows was the performance of the world's best Italian aerobatic team Frecce Tricolori - Tri-Color Arrows. The show was made more attractive by the commentary of a native Italian, who was largely in the beautiful Polish language. The first such comment was during the Air Show Radom 2011. The team performs the show on 10 planes with incredibly intense smoke emphasizing the championship acrobatics. They were in Poland for the first time in 2001. According to our count, this is their fifth performance in Poland. The group was founded in 1961. In 1982, the FIAT G.91 PAN planes were replaced by the Aermacchi MB-339 PAN, which the team uses to this day.
On August 28, 1988, one of the most tragic disasters during the shows took place at the largest American airbase in Germania in Rammstein. Three of the ten MB-339 machines bumped into each other, after which one fell into the audience. 70 people were killed (67 on the ground and three pilots), about 1,000 people were injured, including 346 seriously. Since then, much has been done to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
The Frecce Tricolori team performs a show in the 9 + 1 group, performing spectacular team pieces on 9 planes, and between the team pieces there is a soloist of the group. Thanks to this, there is something in the air all the time. Airplanes made figures used by others, but also characteristic only to them. The soloist made a candle on the sewing of which the plane was completely silent. Or theoretically, a simple flight of a soloist, which felt like an unstable, drunk flight. Also at one point the planes got so scattered in the sky that it seemed that there were many more than 10 of them. Additionally, flight in all possible directions. The band ended the show with the largest Italian flag set in thick smoke. Something incredible. The band show lasted about 35 minutes and was the longest of them all. Only the Frecce Tricolori team gets permission to fly over the audience temporarily during the show.
The Baltic Bees - Bałtyckie Pszczoły band, well-known in Poland, presented themselves from the Baltic countries. The team uses L-39 Albatros aircraft. The band has been to Poland several times already, in different cities: Kraków, Poznań, Radom.
An extremely interesting combination was the team 3 x PZL-130 Orlik + 2 x T6 Harvard M4, training planes. The first contemporary, the second from the Second World War. Our pilots in the West trained on Harvard planes.
During the show, we could admire the interesting team 3 x AT-3 + An-2 "White Red Wings". The first show of this type took place in 2017.
For the first time in Poland, the "KRILA OLUJE" team demonstrated itself on 6 Pilatus PC-9 airplanes. "KRILA OLUJE" is a Croatian band also performing under the English name Wings of Storm. It was established in 2003. The planes are painted in national colors. The debut took place on July 21, 2004.
The band "PATRULLA AGUILA" is a formation from Spain. Flying on C-101 planes, like the Spanish Sparks. Currently, the team uses eight machines. They demonstrated once again at the Radom Air Show. The band "PATRULLA AGUILA" is the only band that uses yellow smoke, because the colors of Spain are red and yellow.
ROYAL JORDAN FALCONS is a team of the Royal Jordanian Forces. It was founded in 1976 by King Hussein Bin Talal. The team is referred to as Jordan's traveling ambassador. The Royal Jordanian Falcons team currently consists of 5 Extra-300 L aerobatic aircraft. The team's headquarters was recently transferred by royal decree to King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba (Red Sea).
MIDNIGHT HAWKS is an aerobatic team of the Finnish Air Force, founded in 1997 at the military base in Kauhava. The team has been using BAE Hawk Mk-51 training planes from the very beginning. The planes have national colors. The team usually operates on 4 planes + one backup. The band performed in Radom for the first time.
PATROUILLE SUISSE is the Swiss Air Force aerobatic team. Initially, the group used Hawker Hunter planes. In 1994, the team replaced the British Hunter with Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighter jets, painted in national colors with a white cross on the bottom of the aircraft and equipped with smoke generators. The team has already been to Poland several times.
The ŻELAZNY AEROBATIC TEAM is a world-famous aerobatic team.
CELLFAST FLYING TEAM is a young Polish airline formation whose goal is to precisely fly in formation. The team consists of Mieczysław Machnik as a leader and winger Arkadiusz Nowak and Daniel Dębosz. Cellfast Flying Team consists of 3 French Socata Morane planes equipped with smoke installations, which increase the attractiveness of the show. This year in Radom, the team did not have the opportunity to present themselves, but you could admire them, for example, in Piotrków Trybunalski.
Both Polish military teams were in Radom: the Orlik Team and the Biało Czerwone Iskry.
Soloists.
The star of the show was the Sukhoi Su-27 UB combat plane in the two-seater version, the Spark. The plane belongs to the Ukrainian Air Force. The Su-27 plane was in Radom in 2017, and earlier in 2009, when the Su-27 UB plane, which belonged to Belarus, crashed.
In Radom, three General Dynamics / Lockheed F-16, SAAB JAS-39 Gripen, Eurofighter, SAAB-105 planes could be seen in the air.
During the flight, we could admire the NATO Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS, which in those days was based at Dęblin Airport, being presented there at a static exhibition.
For the first time in Poland, we could see the JF-17 combat aircraft, which is a cooperation department between China and Pakistan. The plane in Pakistan is called PAC JF-17 Thunder, and in China it is Chengdu FC-1 Xiaolong. The aircraft by the manufacturers is classified as the fourth generation and has already been used in local conflicts. Pakistan financed 60% of development costs, worth approximately US $ 500 million. The aircraft technically corresponds to the first versions of the F-16. The JF-17 has a fly-by-wire control system. Pakistan's planes have avionics and weapons largely Western. China's planes have native avionics and weapons. The aircraft is powered by an RD-93 engine with a thrust of 49.9 kN (84.5 kN with an afterburner), which is a development of the RD-33 from the MiG-29. During the development works, Snecma M53-P2 engines from Mirage 2000 were taken into account. The aircraft made its first flight on August 25, 2003. Production started in 2007. Pakistanis also demonstrated the PAC Super Mushsak disposable aircraft at the static exhibition. Pakistanis arrived in Radom the earliest, as they needed a longer acclimatization.
These are only some of the attractions that were at the Air Show Radom 2018.
