Black Hawk

The Vietnamese war formed views on the use of helicopters on the battlefield. For the first time in the United States, a branch of the Air Cavalry was organized, whose basic means of transport were helicopters. A commonly used machine was the Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) helicopter. However, with the beginning of 60 years, this helicopter did not meet the growing requirements of the army. Command of the US Army in the years 1965-1971 developed the assumptions defined UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System). On January 5, 1972, the competition was announced. The following companies joined the competition: Boeing Vertol and Sikorsky Aircraft. Both constructions were similar to each other.
That's how Sikorsky S-70 / YUH-60 A Black Hawk was created.

Sikorsky S-70 is an American family of medium utility helicopters, manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. The helicopter was developed for the US Army in 70-years, winning the competition and was designated as UH-60 Black Hawk and created a large family in the US military service. Since then, new and improved UH-60 versions have been developed. Civil versions and military versions are produced in accordance with various markings of S-70 models.

The multirole Black Hawk helicopter serves in the US Army and the armed forces of 28 other countries around the world as a rugged, reliable utility helicopter.



In the last 40 years, this helicopter has operated in countless areas of combat to transport and evacuate a soldier, save human life, as a MEDEVAC evacuation platform or victims of conflicts, provide supplies to soldiers, delivering basic products during natural disasters. The helicopter acts as an air fireman and is used to patrol the borders.

Currently, a modern variant of this helicopter is taking a new set of missions - as an armed helicopter, which ensures the elimination of enemy fire, when supporting ground troops, as well as creating an armed escort. Thanks to digital avionics, powerful General Electric engines, high airframe strength and composite, wide rotor blades, today's Black Hawk platform has better survival capability, provides a complete assessment of the situation, can fly higher and carry more cargo than its previous versions.

Over 4,000 Black Hawk machines of all types are now used throughout the world. The United States Army is the largest operator with 2,135 pieces of H-60. The same helicopter is exported internationally directly from Sikorsky under the designation S-70.

The S-70 family was developed to meet the requirements of the US Army to replace the UH-1 Iroquois medium helicopter family. The works started in 1972. Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) - a system of tactical air transport. Three prototypes (+ two for ground tests) were built, S-70 / YUH-60 A, and the first flight was made on October 17, 1974. The Boeing-Vertol YUH-61A was a competitor. The competitive YUH-61 machine was flown on November 29, 1974.

In the spring of 1976, the military began testing flights. Each company delivered 3 helicopters. In virtually every way, YUH-60 towered at YUH-61. He had a faster climb speed, maximum speed, lower own weight, lower operating costs, and a greater level of safety for the crew. The YUH-61 A helicopter had only a better impeller, so-called semi-rigid, composite, built on the basis of the MBB license.

The result of the competition was announced on December 23, 1976. The winner was YUH-60A and was directed to production and entered service as UH-60 A Black Hawk in the US Army in 1979. The first flight of serial UH-60 took place on October 17, 1978.

The first order from December 1976 included 15 machines, then in the spring of 1977, a further 368 machines were ordered, with a deadline of completion until the end of 1981. The first UH-60 A helicopter was delivered to the US Army on October 31, 1978. On 19 June 1979, the first UH-60 A helicopter went to the training center in Alabama. The first operational unit was the 101st Air Cavalry Unit at Fort Cambell, Kentucky.

In April 1982, another large order was placed for 294 machines with a delivery time until the end of 1985. The contract value is $ 950 million.

The first military operation for UH-60 was the American intervention in Grenada in 1983. Helicopters transported invasion troops from the aircraft carrier Guam to the island. UH-60 turned out to be very good. One of the UH-60 returned to the base with many bullet holes.

After entering the service, the helicopter was modified for new missions and tasks, including mines and medical evacuations. The EH-60 variant was developed to conduct electronic warfare. MH-60 variant for special aviation operations and support of other missions. At the end of the 80's, the model was upgraded to the UH-60 L, which received new General Electric T700-701C engines with more power.

The upgraded UH-60 M model was developed in early 2000. UH-60 M and its international version, S-70i, with GPS navigation, glass cockpit, integrated flight management system and significant modernization of the propulsion system and rotor, adding both power and lifting capacity.

Several versions of the S-70 are used to transport the president of the United States, who is called the "Marine One" when transporting the president.

In assault operations, the machine can carry 20 people, a branch of 11 armed soldiers or 105 mm M102 howitzer, thirty ammunition shells and a crew of six. Alternatively, it can carry 2 600 pounds (1 200 kg) of a load or suspended load of 9,000 pounds (4,100 kg).

The US Navy received the first personalized SH-60 B Seahawk (Sea Hawk) in 1983, and the SH-60 F Ocean Hawk in 1988.

HH-60 G Pave Hawk is a highly modified version of the S-70 helicopter, designed primarily to rescue a crewed plane or other isolated personnel during a war or conflict. It is equipped with a winch with a 250-foot (76-m) rope, which has a capacity of 600 pounds (270 kg). The helicopter has a retractable refueling probe in flight. US Air Force received MH-60 G Pave Hawk in 1982.

The Coast Guard of the United States received HH-60 J Jayhawk in 1992.

S-70 A Firehawk is an S-70 version designed to extinguish fires, rescue, medical evacuation and external lifting of large loads and equipment. The Oregon National Guard was the first military organization in the world to add Firehawk to its equipment. The Fire Department in Los Angeles was the first urban organization to use these helicopters.

In the American film "Helikopter w ogniu" directed by Ridley Scott, the real events from the operation in Mogadishu were presented. During the action of the American forces, two MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. The film was made in 2001, and it presents the events of 1993.

S-70i Black Hawk: The international military version produced by the subsidiary Sikorsky, PZL Mielec in Poland.

S-70i Black Hawk

The S-70i Black Hawk helicopter is the latest model of the Black Hawk multirole aircraft family. The helicopter is being built by PZL Mielec, a subsidiary of Sikorsky Aircraft. The S-70i is offered to international military clients and government agencies.

The letter "i" in the name means international - international.

The S-70i helicopter can be configured in accordance with customer-specific missions, such as military transport and assault, command and control, border patrol, search and rescue, cargo transport and VIP transport.

In PZL Mielec, the first cabin was built on March 12, 2009. The first complete helicopter S-70i in PZL Mielec was built on March 15, 2010, and its first flight was made at the Sikorsky Aircraft research center in West Palm Beach, Florida on July 1, 2010.

The S-70i and UH-60 helicopters have the same airframe, therefore the UH-60 helicopter element is manufactured in PZL Mielec. Initially, the S-70i helicopters went to the US for retrofitting. Then, the completion of helicopters was carried out at PZL Mielec and from Mielec, they were delivered to customers.

PZL Mielec delivered the first three S-70i Black Hawk helicopters to the customer in August 2011.

Sikorsky Aircraft signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense of Brunei in December 2011. For the supply of 12 S-70i helicopters for Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAF). The contract scope also includes the supply of spare parts, training equipment and ground support, as well as an option for ten additional helicopters.

Sikorsky delivered five S-70i Black Hawks to the Special Forces unit at the Air Assault Division in Colombia in March 2013. The Colombian army placed an order with Sikorsky Aircraft for two additional S-70i Black Hawk in April 2013.

The S-70i Black Hawk has a maximum gross weight of 9,979 kg. It can accommodate two crew members and up to 13 armed soldiers.

Reliable design of the S-70i airframe, it is resistant to collisions, integrates the structure of the hold and cockpit. The construction can resist a fire from hand weapons and larger projectiles. Entry and exit of the crew and soldiers is carried out by opening the cockpit door and two sliding doors of the hold.

The helicopter can be equipped with ballistic protection, active vibration control system, medical equipment, integrated helicopter control system (IVHM), additional fuel tanks, external rescue winch, cone device and load hook.

The S-70i glass cockpit offers secure places in the event of an accident for the pilot and co-pilot. The fully integrated digital cockpit is equipped with an advanced avionics package with four 10-inch multifunction displays (MFD), dual digital automatic flight control system and coupled flight controller and flight management system (FMS).

The navigation and communication systems include a dual built-in GPS / INS system with a digital map, two UHF / VHF, AM / FM radios, an automatic direction detector, VOR / ILS and a three-stage electronic communication system (ICS).

The spacious storage area is 8.1 m².

The S-70i basic helicopter does not have standard weaponry. Newly built S-70i helicopters or existing platforms can be integrated into the Battlehawk system. The system includes machine guns, 70 mm rocket launchers, a laser-air-ground-guided missile system, controlled from a pilot's helmet, an external armament fixing system on outriggers.

The navigation and communication systems include a dual built-in GPS / INS system with a digital map, two UHF / VHF, AM / FM radios, an automatic direction detector, VOR / ILS and a three-stage electronic communication system (ICS).

The S-70i Black Hawk is powered by two T700-GE701D turbocharged engines equipped with an electronic type C control system. Each engine develops a maximum power of 1,447 kW.

Turbine engines can run for 30 minutes without lubrication. The T700-GE-701D engine is replaced in 4 hours. The helicopter has an auxiliary power unit APU Solar T62T-40-1 with 100 HP (75 kW).

The twin-engine drive moves the main rotor consisting of four composite-titanium blades. The fuel system consists of two independent and self-sealing fuel tanks placed behind the loader. A single-point connection allows pressure refueling of all fuel tanks.

The S-70i Black Hawk is equipped with a three-point chassis with energy absorption functions. The durable chassis allows you to land and take off from virtually any unprepared area.

The S-70i can fly at a maximum cruising speed of 277 km / h. The service ceiling of the AEO helicopter (all operational engines) is 13,200 feet. The helicopter has a maximum range of 459 km without reserve.

The S-70i Black Hawk can be transported on board the Lockheed C-130 Hercules or any larger aircraft.

Black Hawk for Polish Special Forces

Poland as a country with huge experience in the field of helicopter construction and production, Poland does not have to be dependent on purchases of equipment from abroad, from factories that could at any moment impose an embargo on the supply of spare parts to Poland.

It is in Poland's interest to regain the total impact on the PZL Świdnik plant. Maintenance in the production of helicopters PZL SW-4, PZL W-3 Sokół / Głuszec and the commencement of work on the helicopter PZL Sokół Long / Max. However, this plan, at this stage, is unrealistic.

In this situation, the "B" plan remains, i.e. the acquisition of helicopters built in the country.

At the end of 2016, several declarations regarding the acquisition of new machines were made by the government. Among other things, the Defense Ministry declared the purchase of 10 Black Hawk helicopters from Mielec (two in 2016 and eight in 2017) for Special Forces. To increase the chances of finalizing the contract, the Minister of National Defense, Antoni Macierewicz, secreted all activities in this matter. Nevertheless, the proceedings conducted in "complete confidentiality, for orders of fundamental importance for the security of the state" were blocked by freemasonry.

In 2017, two procedures were launched for the purchase of helicopters for the Polish Navy and Special Forces. Assault machines have also become a priority. The problem is that the change in the position of the Minister of National Defense on January 9, 2018, did not serve to maintain the liquidity of the proceedings.

In 2018, the Armament Inspectorate ran procedures for the purchase of 8 machines for Special Forces and the same number of ZOP (anti-submarine) machines with the possibility of performing rescue missions in combat conditions for the Navy (CSAR). On 18 January 2017, the Minister of National Defense Antoni Macierewicz informed that the purchase of helicopters under the urgent operational need is to include eight machines for Special Forces and eight for the Navy (16 in total). Optimistic were the forecasts that the contract (s) will be concluded in less than a year, and the first machines will be no later than mid-2018. The time was too short.

In March 2018, corrections were made to WTT. The aim was to make the delivery dates of new helicopters more realistic, as well as the issues of inspections, servicing and repairs.

The current selection of medium-sized helicopter is extremely important, because it will set the direction for at least another 50 years. As it was with the WSB Lockheed F-16 Jastrząb planes.

Special Forces are a Polish specialty. Poland has five special brigades. The purchase of helicopters for these formations results from the commitments made in the framework of detailed arrangements in NATO. Black Hawk helicopters (Sikorsky and PZL Mielec consortium), AW.101 (PZL Świdnik) and H225 Caracal (a consortium of Airbus Helicopters and Heli Ivest) were proposed.

On January 25, 2019, on Friday, a contract was signed for the supply of four Black Hawk helicopters for Special Forces. According to the assurances of the head of the Defense Ministry, Mariusz Błaszczak, it is the first party. Helicopters were produced in PZL Mielec, which since 2007 belongs to the Americans, and since 2015 is owned by Lockheed Martin.

The contract was signed by Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak and the president of PZL Mielec Janusz Zakręcki. PZL Mielec is responsible for delivering the machines. Helicopters will be delivered by December 2019. The contract value is PLN 683.4 million gross. The price includes a logistics package, comprehensive training of pilots and technical staff, and retrofitting machines with specialized equipment for Special Forces. Minister ON Mariusz Błaszczak said - "This is an important day. The Polish Army bought Black Hawks, checked helicopters. "He stressed that this is a structure selected by more than 20 countries, also tested in combat conditions, including in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also took part in the ceremony of signing the contract. The Prime Minister stressed that - "Through this type of purchases, Poland strengthens not only the NATO alliance and the security of the Polish sky, but also the Polish industry. Black Hawk for the Polish Police

In the shadow of helicopter contracts for the Polish Army, the Polish Police unexpectedly announced that it would acquire helicopters for its needs. On May 30, 2018, a contract was signed for the purchase of two Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters for the Polish Police. In the presence of the Minister of Interior and Administration Joachim Brudziński, the contract for the purchase of machinery was signed by Chief Commander of the Police, Superintendent Jarosław Szymczyk.

Helicopters purchased by the Police will be assigned to landing and transport tasks. They will serve in the activities carried out by the Anti-Terrorist Operations Office.

The helicopters for the Polish Police got loud in April 16, 2018, when the Lockheed Martin group on its official website in the USA published an ad for work on servicing S-70i helicopters of the Polish Police. On April 21, 2018, the Airbus Helicopters group officially announced the willingness to participate in the tender. The contract for Black Hawk helicopters was closed on 5 May 2018, without the participation of the press and television.

On 4 July 2018, the Police disclosed the price of the contract, which totaled PLN 142.66 million. Helicopters were bought "from a free hand" as an urgent need for national defense.

In the US, Black Hawk helicopters are used by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). State Police in the United States use smaller machines, but with serious actions it is supported by the National Guard, which has Black Hawk. Black Hawk helicopters have Police in countries such as Turkey, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.

On November 30, 2018, Friday, the plants in Mielec gave the police two helicopters Black Hawk. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and minister Joachim Brudzinski. The ceremony took place at the Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, where their base is located. Helicopters were sacrificed by the priest's chaplain. Helicopters will be used mainly in special operations, anti-terrorism, search campaigns and natural disasters. At the beginning, the staff consisted of 8 mechanics and 6 pilots.

"Joachim Brudziński reminded that the youngest helicopter, which has the Police, is 13 years old, and the oldest is 47 years old.


In mid-November 2018, a contract was signed for the supply of a third Black Hawk helicopter for the Police.

This is not the end of new helicopters for the police. On February 1, 2019, it was reported that the police would receive three new light Bell-407GXi helicopters. They will replace the most depleted PZL Mi-2 helicopters. By the way, it was revealed that the two previous tenders were canceled. In both cases, the only offer was made by the Polish representative of the Airbus Helicopters group, offering H.125 machines. The communiqué did not provide information on the amount or why the police chose Bell. It is a fact that the police have three other helicopters from Bell.

The S-70 / UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter is built in the classic system - Sikorsky. It is a medium, twin-engine, all-metal, multirole helicopter.

Fuselage


Airframe made of aluminum alloys with the participation of composites (glass and kevlar laminates). The floor in the cockpit and hold made of glass and nomex laminate. Composites were also used in the tail boom. Such a beam is lighter by 10% than the traditional one made entirely of metal.

The helicopter was developed in terms of increased resistance to crush during a fall. In the event of a collision with the ground with a vertical speed of 11.5 m / s and a horizontal velocity of 12.2 m / s, the structure of the helicopter should behave in 85%. It should withstand a horizontal acceleration of 20 g and vertical acceleration of 10 g.

The crew's armchairs are armored with a Kevlar. The entrance to the cockpit is provided by a car door on the left and right side, with a height of 1.37 m. They can be broken down in an emergency. The canoe takes 11-14 fully armed soldiers aboard. After dismounting the middle seats, 4-6 pairs of stretchers or cargo can be mounted. The load compartment is heated and air-conditioned. Access to the hold is provided by a large sliding door on the left and right side, with a height of 1.75 m. The helicopter can take 105 mm howitzer, 50 missiles to it and a service consisting of 5 soldiers. The volume of the cockpit and holds is 10.90 cubic meters.
The system of external suspension with the designation ESSS consists of a set of catches fixed to the hull and four booms mounted to them. The total lifting capacity of the external suspension is 4,536 kg.

Vertical elevation is the widened tip of the tail beam. In its interior are an intermediate gearbox and a tail rotor gear placed on the right side.

The horizontal contour has a large surface with a trapezoidal contour and a variable angle wedged. It has a large scope of change; from +34 degrees (during hover) to -6 degrees (with autorotation). Its control system takes into account the flight speed of the helicopter as well as the inclination and lateral acceleration. The control is doubled electric and additionally manual, mechanical.

The tail beam part is folded to the right.

The central part of the blade has an overhang of the leading edge and a flap at the trailing edge to overcome the turbulence from the previous blade in horizontal flight. The angle of the spade is 18 degrees. The tips are skewed angles with an angle of 20 degrees. The shovels have oval cross-section girders. The flow of blades made in the hive system of nomexsu with the epoxy-gray composite coating. The shovel blade is also made of glass fiber composite, additionally covered with a titanium cover. The tips of the blades were made of Kevlar. The shovel withstands a puncture with a 23 mm bullet. In the interior, the shovel is filled with pressurized gas and has sensors that inform about the durability of the structure. The de-aerating of the leading edge is carried out using the electrical system.

Elastomer bearings of the C / R Industries rotor head are lubricated. Vibration dampers are mounted in the head. The head has been designed so that you can manually fold the rotor blades for easier to hangar or loading to a transport aircraft. Rotor diameter: 16.36 m (53 ft 8 in).

Tail rotor

A four-blade tail propeller with a similar structure as the rotor blades. Also electrically de-iced. It is placed on the right side of the tail beam. Works as a pulling propeller. Its surface is deviated from the vertical to the left by an angle of 20 degrees. Thanks to this, it produces a small upward thrust, which makes it easier to balance the helicopter and allows for a greater center of gravity. Diameter of the tail rotor: 3.35 m.

Main gear


The main transmission in a conventional system. Two turbine engines with a free turbine transmit the drive through planetary gears and a set of gears to the main shaft of the main rotor and to the propeller shaft propeller. The main transmission has a structure consisting of five modules. It is possible to work after total loss of oil for 30 minutes. The rotor head may be down to a dozen centimeters down to hang or transport by plane.

Drive system


The power unit consists of two General Electric T700-GE-700 turbines with a capacity of 2 x 1 151 kW. The civilian version of the engine is General Electric CT-7-2C. Their total power transferred to the transmission is 2,109 kW. The newer version is General Electric T700-GE-701 A with a starting power of 2 x 1 285 kW.

Engine construction: 5-degree axial, 1-degree radial, annular combustion chamber, 2-stage turbine, free turbine. 5: 1 compression, air flow 4.5 kg / s at 44 720 rpm. A free turbine with a rotational speed of 17,000 - 21,000 rpm. The engine was mainly made of AM-355 stainless steel. Dimensions 1.181 m x 0.635 m x 0.584 m.

The engines are far away from each other, which makes it impossible to destroy them both with one hit. In addition, they have fire barriers between each other. The engines are capable of operating in extreme climatic conditions, high resistance to the opponent's fire means, simple operation, small dimensions in relation to the power achieved. These engines are also used in Apache AH-64 helicopters.

The air inlets can be fitted with ring filters that capture 85% of air pollutants: sand and dust.

APU - Solar type T-62T-40-1. Engine starting system from Garret. Additional installations for starting engines at extremely low temperatures can be used.

The Pallet installation consists of two tanks located behind the loader with a total capacity of 1 340 liters. The tanks have high crush strength and are self-sealing. It is possible to install additional tanks in the hold or on external booms.

Equipment


Electrical installation with voltage 24/28 V. Current generators manufactured by Bendix 30/40 kVA and 20/30 kVA. Nickel-cadmium batteries with a capacity of 17 Ah. Fire protection system with fire extinguishers installed in the drive compartment and in the fuselage. Starts automatically or manually.

Sikorsky-Mielec Black Hawk S-70i

In 2009, the construction of S-70 helicopter fuselages began in Mielec, and from 2010, complete S-70i helicopters for various countries. In PZL Mielec, the first cabin was built on March 12, 2009. The first complete helicopter S-70i in PZL Mielec was built on March 15, 2010, and its first flight was made at the Sikorsky Aircraft research center in West Palm Beach, Florida on July 1, 2010. The S-70i and UH-60 helicopters have the same airframe, therefore the UH-60 helicopter element is manufactured in PZL Mielec. Initially, the S-70i helicopters went to the US for retrofitting. Then, the completion of helicopters was carried out at PZL Mielec and from Mielec, they were delivered to customers.

PZL Mielec delivered the first three S-70i Black Hawk helicopters to the customer in August 2011. Helicopters from Mielec were delivered to Brunei and Colombia.

Black Hawk for the Special Forces of the Polish Army

On January 25, 2019, on Friday, a contract was signed for the supply of four Black Hawk helicopters for Special Forces. According to the assurances of the head of the Defense Ministry, Mariusz Błaszczak, it is the first party. Helicopters were produced in PZL Mielec. Helicopters will be delivered by 2020.

Black Hawk for the Polish Police

On May 30, 2018, a contract was signed for the purchase of two Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters for the Polish Police. In the presence of the Minister of Interior and Administration Joachim Brudziński, the contract for the purchase of machinery was signed by Chief Commander of the Police, Superintendent Jarosław Szymczyk. In fact, the contract was concluded on May 5, 2018.

On November 30, 2018, Friday, the plants in Mielec gave the police two helicopters Black Hawk. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and minister Joachim Brudzinski. The ceremony took place at the Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, where their base is located. At the beginning, the staff consisted of 8 mechanics and 6 pilots.

In mid-November 2018, a contract was signed for the supply of a third Black Hawk helicopter for the Police. It was delivered in March 2019.


All three Black Hawk helicopters were demonstrated on the fly during the parade in Warsaw on May 3, 2019.
