Fighter with radar sight.

PZL WSK Lim-5 P was the first Polish fighter aircraft with a radar. The airplanes were built at the factory „PZL WSK” in Mielec and between the years 1959-1960, 129 aircraft were built in 6 production series. 40 of them were sold to the DGR. The first copy with the serial number 1D-01-01 left the plant on January 18, 1959. The last copy of PZL WSK Lim-5 P 1D 06-41 was made on December 29, 1960. The radar was called „RP Izumrud”. It had a range of about 6 km and it had two antennas; a target detection antenna and a target tracking antenna. Currently, several PZL WSK Lim-5 aircraft are in Polish museums.

Construction Lim-5

The aircraft is a consistent development of the MiG-15 bis (Lim-2) design, which is intended primarily for a new power unit equipped with an afterburner, the used predecessors did not have. The whole system is left, but thanks to the longer power unit, the extension of the submission of the fuselage, which made the aircraft slimmer. A clearly more powerful propulsion tractor was not created, however, that the aircraft became a supersonic structure. It is true that the machine is capable of reaching speeds equal to or slightly higher than Ma-1, and in horizontal flight, but it only lasts a short time and is paid for by considerable fuel consumption. At least the most important thing on serial aircraft is the automatic mount, which at M-0.97 puts out the brakes and retracts them automatically when the speed drops to Ma-0.92. So it's a typical fighter jet not to use sound speed.

Single-engine, single-seat front fighter, built in a classic layout. Medium wing, with slanting wing. Half-shell construction, riveted.

An oblique wing, called a sickle wing, with a skew angle of 45 degrees at the fuselage and 42 degrees further. Laminar profile S-12s at the base and SR-11 at the end were used. The area of the wings is 22.6 m2, wedge angle 1 degree, rise -3 degrees, relative thickness 8%, elongation 4.08, convergence 1.23. Single girder design with rear auxiliary girder. 5.1 kg weight at the end of each wing. Flaps with a total area of 2.86 m2 swing out 20 degrees to take off and 60 degrees to land. Shuttlecocks with a total area of 1.6 m2 are tilted up and down by 18 degrees. The left aileron is fitted with a trimmer moved by an electric motor. On the upper surface of the panels three pairs of aerodynamic steering wheels. The sash is mounted to the hull with four fittings.

The fuselage has a circular section technologically divided into two parts. The front part consists of 13 frames, the rear part of 18. The frame and the rear wing girder are mounted to frame 13. The maximum hull diameter is 1.45 m, the elongation is 6.17 m. The thickness of the coating varies from 1.5 to 1 mm. The air duct walls are 0.8 mm thick. Aerodynamic brakes with a total area of ​​0.98 m2, are pivoted by an angle of 55 degrees. The brakes are operated by a remote control, and additionally an automatic device that does not allow to exceed critical speeds. At Ma-0.97, the brakes open and close at Ma-0.92. Pilot's cabin partly armored from below. The glazing is a fixed front windbreak with a central armored window and a fairing moved backwards by hand. A periscope at the top of the glazing to observe the rear zone. In the cabin, an overload protection system with PPK-1 garment and a chair thrown out with a face cover. Catapulting is allowed on flights over 250 m and up to a speed of 850 km / h.

Engine Lim-5.

The license Lim-5, Lim-5 P built in Poland are powered by engines also produced under license by the Polish industry in WSK Rzeszów. It is a Lis-5 engine (license engine) with 1 x 26.46 kN (1 x 2 700 kG) thrust, and with post-combustion 1 x 33.12 kN (1 x 3 380 kG).

The afterburner is connected to the engine and constitutes an extended and properly formed exhaust pipe. A set of injectors was placed there, through which additional fuel is supplied, and its combustion causes an increase in thrust. The afterburner is ended with an adjustable nozzle. The nozzle is completely open during the afterburner operation. When the afterburner is off, the moving segments close together reducing the cross-section of the outlet opening. The engine fuel is supplied by the PCR-1-5 pump.

The fuel was placed only in the fuselage of the aircraft, in the same way as in the Lim-1 / -2 fighter. the main soft fuel tank is located between the cab and the engine and has a capacity of 1,200 (1,250) liters. The second metal-type tank consists of two halves covering the engine at the rear of the hull. It has a capacity of 2 x 165 liters.

The internal fuel supply can be increased by using tanks suspended under the wings with a capacity of 2 x 400 liters. These tanks are made of duralumin sheet or plastic. There is a possibility of their drop during flight.

The list includes all MiG-17, MiG-17 PF, Lim-5, Lim-5 P aircraft manufactured and used in Poland. The list does not include the Lim-6 bis, Lim-6 M assault version.

MiG-17 PF. In the second half of 1955, 12 MiG-17 PF aircraft (with a radar station) were bought. As part of the University of Warsaw, a pursuit unit (1 Independent Pursuit Squadron) was created at Bemowo airport, which was then moved to Mińsk Mazowiecki.

Until 2010, three MiG-17 PF aircraft from 12 aircraft have survived:

  • MiG-17 PF No. 3624/948. The aircraft has been in Dęblin since at least 1997. From 2010, an exhibit of the Museum in Dęblin.
  • MiG-17 PF nb. 949. After serving, in 1995, set as a monument in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski.
  • MiG-17 PF nb. 100. After serving, he went to the Museum in Skarżysko Kamienna. In 2010, he went to the Museum in Deblin.

In 1956, four MiG-17 F aircraft were bought. Two of them were used as a benchmark for serial production of Lim-5 aircraft at WSK PZL Mielec.

Lim-5. The first "zero" series, consisting of three Lim-5 aircraft. The aircraft were subjected to factory and military tests.

Lim-5. The second production series consisting of 20 aircraft. The planes were built in the second half of 1956. They received numbers from 1C 02-01 to 1C 02-20.

  • Lim-5 No. 1C 02-01 / 201. Built in 1956. The aircraft underwent tests from 1957-02-08 to 1957-04-19. The aircraft served as a production benchmark. In March 1958, the aircraft was transferred to the Institute of Aviation and transferred to the airport in Bemowo. Further tests were completed in December 1959. In 1960, the AFA-39 camera was mounted on this aircraft, thus creating the Lim-5 R aircraft.
  • Lim-5 nr 1C 02-05 / 205. After serving, sent as teaching aid to the School in Zamość. Then set up as a monument in the Park in Zamość (2000). Then sold to a private collector.

Lim-5. The third production series consisting of 20 aircraft. The planes were built in the first half of 1957. They received numbers from 1C 03-01 to 1C 03-20.

  • Lim-5 No. 1C 03-01 / 301. Used in 28 PLM in Słupsk. In 2003, he was still Słupsk, as an exhibit.
  • Lim-5 nr 1C 03-05 / 305. After serving, he was sent to the Museum in Lublinek. In 2010, handed over to the Museum in Dęblin.
  • Lim-5 nr 1C 03-09 / 309 - 5058. In 2002, set as a monument in Nowe Miasto nad Pilica with the fictitious number 5058.

Lim-5. The fourth production series consisting of 20 aircraft. The planes were built in the first half of 1957. They received numbers from 1C 04-01 to 1C 04-20.

  • Lim-5 nr 1C 04-08 / 408. After serving, he was sent to the Museum in Lublinek. In 2010, handed over to the Museum in Dęblin.
  • Lim-5 nr 1C 04-09 / 409. In 2004, he was in Miastko.
  • Lim-5 No. 1C 04-15 / 415. Used in 2 PLM in Czyżyny. He remained in the Museum in Czyżyny.
  • Lim-5 nr 1C 04-18 / 418. In 1996 sold to a private collector in the Netherlands.

Lim-5. In the second half of 1957, 120 Lim-5 aircraft were built for the GDR. The aircraft were built in four production series with the numbers: From 1C 06-01 to 1C 06-30, from 1C 07-01 to 1C 07-30, from 1C 08-01 to 1C 08-30, from 1C 09-01 to 1C 09 -30.

By the end of 1957, 222 Lim-5 machines were built, of which 77 were handed over to the Polish Army.

  • Lim-5 P nr 1D 01-04 / 104. The plane went to Modlin to CSL. In 1969, the plane performed flights from the Kamien Śląski airport. Shortly after the start, the electrical installation failed. The pilot lost radio communication. He decided to return to the airport. When extending the chassis, the left chassis did not come out. The pilot repeatedly tried to release them in an emergency. With no effect. He landed on the grass strip for two points. The plane dangerously, but luckily landed. The pilot survived the landing. The plane has been repaired. The plane went to 2 PLM in Goleniów. On 1970-07-30, during landing at the airport in Świdwin, the front shin broke off. The plane has finished running on the nose. The hull and engine control system were damaged, which was only turned off by the technical team. The plane was removed from the state.

  • Lim-5 P No. 1D 04-20. Production date 1960-08-05. It served in 11 PLM in Debrzno. On 1963-08-15, at 21:00, lieutenant pilot Andrzej Pytlak, from the Babie Doły airport, took off with the task of patrolling the sea zone. As a result of wrong guidance from the ground he went far into the sea. After several changes of course, he noticed the glow of the Tri-City light. The plane, however, had little fuel. At a height of 4,500 m, the engine stopped working. The plane entered a glider flight. The pilot catapulted at an altitude of 2000 m and due to strong wind he reached the land. The pilot landed in the yard in the forester's lodge near Kartuz.

Lim-5 P. The fifth production series consisting of 24 aircraft, which were built in the period from January 1960 to April 1960. The aircraft received numbers from 1D 05-01 to 1D 05-23.

Pilot Matysiak took off first (23:55). After a minute, the captain pilot Wiesław Listwoń took off. While breaking through the clouds, the plane of the captain pilot Wiesław Listwoń dived and collided with the ground at 00:07. The pilot was killed on the spot. The place of fall was 4 km from the Bąk railway station on the Kościerzyna-Bydgoszcz line. The cause of the catastrophe has not been determined and the loss of consciousness by the pilot was considered probable.

Captain pilot Józef Groszewski performed the task - capturing an air target. After the aircraft was removed from the attack, the electrical system failed. When approaching the landing, the right main landing gear did not come out. The pilot landed on two points, slightly damaging the aircraft that was repaired. In 1979, the plane went to the school in Zamosc. In 2004, as an exhibit in Ustianów.
  • Lim-5 P nr 1D 05-10 / 510. It served in the 2nd PLM in Czyżyny, and then in the 10th PLM in Łask. On 1971-08-10, as a result of a short circuit in the electrical system, during service on the ground, the plane caught fire. The fire was extinguished, but the aircraft could not be repaired and was canceled.
  • Lim-5 P No. 1D 05-11 / 511. It served in 26 PLM in Zegrze Pomorskie. Rebuilt to Lim-6 M. After service, sold to a collector in the USA.

The pilot was intercepting the target, which was the Lim-2 aircraft. The flight was performed at NTWA. The plane was guided from the station in Łęczyca. At 21:37 communication with the aircraft was lost. The burned plane wreck was found in the village of Suszno. Polot did not attempt to catapult and died on the spot. The causes of the disaster have not been determined, and the loss of spatial orientation by the pilot was considered probable. As it was established, the plane hit the forest at a speed of 700 km / h, in diving 40 degrees, with a tilt of 50 degrees to the right wing.

  • Lim-5 P No. 1D 05-21 / 521. In 1994, he was in the US, Florida with a private collector, as a flying plane. In 2005, intended for the source of spare parts.
  • Lim-5 P No. 1D 05-22 / 522. It served in 11 PLM in Debrzno. On 1966-01-26, there was a catastrophe in which lieutenant pilot Jan Siemieński was killed. The pilot was doing the task in the zone. At 13:04 the pilot reported that he was choking. After which the communication was broken. The plane collided with the ground at 13:08 in Krępsk, Człuchów district. The impact occurred in a horizontal flight into a low mountain. A strong fuel smell has been detected in the oxygen pipes. It has not been established how fuel got into the oxygen system.
  • Lim-5 P No. 1D 05-23 / 523. It served in 11 PLM in Debrzno. Rebuilt to Lim-6 M. Ended service in 1985. Preserved in Siemirowice as a monument.

The aircraft underwent a bench test of the engine. As a result of damage to the thread on the fuel system, fuel got between the engine and the fuselage. Then there was a fire and destruction of the aircraft.

The aircraft was repaired. On 1968-02-26, there was a collision while landing with Lim-2 aircraft No. 1B 08-09. Both aircraft landed with a time difference of just 20 seconds. Lim-2 landed first and quickly lost speed, then slowly taxied to the descent into the taxiway. The second one landed Lim-5 P, and the pilot, due to smoke over the lane from a nearby village, had limited visibility. He noticed the Lim-2 at the last moment. The Lim-5 P turned sharply, but it still collided. The speed of the Lim-5 P was 80 km / h. The planes collided and the Lim-2 plane turned 360 degrees. The Lim-5 P hit the Lim-2 wing with a suspended fuel tank and broke it off, over a length of 2 m. The Lim-5 P was repaired and the Lim-2 fuselage was rebuilt as an SB Lim-2 aircraft. On 1968-10-25 the plane was crashed. At 21:24, lieutenant pilot Roman Blicharz took off to NZWA. Task - capture in the stratosphere. After take-off, at an altitude of 150 m, there was a engine failure and fire. The pilot also heard strange creaks in the back of the fuselage. The pilot at an altitude of 700 m and at a speed of 320 km / h, was successfully catapulted (essentially by removing the curtain). The plane crashed in the woods, 5 km from the airport. The reason was a crack in one combustion chamber due to a material defect. The flames came out of the combustion chamber and at the same time the turbine blades overheated, which lengthened and rubbed against the interior of the engine. As a result, the rotational speed of the damaged engine decreased.
  • Lim-5 P nr 1D 06-08 / 608. It served in the 1st PLM in Minsk Mazowiecki. On 1963-09-10 the aircraft was damaged. Pilot captain Ryszard Styczen performed a flight at NTWA. After completing the task, he tried to land at the airport in Minsk Mazowiecki. He even touched the ground with his wheels, but he pulled the plane up. He was ordered to land at the airport in Dęblin, where the weather conditions were better. However, in Dęblin there was no readiness to accept aircraft. Lighting was secured in a hurry. At 23:45, Lim-5 P landed on a grass surface, landing 600 m in front of the runway. The front chassis was shattered first, then the others. The plane stopped after 350 m of roll-out. In November 1964, the aircraft was repaired at LZR-4 in Dęblin. In 70-years the plane was rebuilt into Lim-6 MR.
  • Lim-5 P No. 1D 06-09 / 609. Used in 2 PLM in Czyżyny. Then in 10 PLM in Łask. From 1979 at the School in Oleśnica. In 1993, private ownership in Smardzów. The plane was set up as an advertisement. In 2005, sold to France.

Being 60 km from the airport, he received a command to lower to 4,000 m. He lost spatial orientation by puncturing subsequent clouds. Unable to determine the position of the aircraft, and seeing the altitude rapidly decreasing, he decided to catapult. He suffered a broken arm. It was 22:18.
  • Lim-5 P No. 1D 06-13 / 613. It served in the 1st PLM in Minsk Mazowiecki. Rebuilt to version Lim-6 M.

During the approach to landing, after dark, the pilot had doubts about the correct speedometer readings. He moved to the other circle and found that the device was working properly. At 18:05 the plane landed. During the roll-out the front shin folded and the plane ended the run on the nose. The pilot was blamed. The plane has been repaired. In 70 years the plane was rebuilt into the Lim-6 M version.
