History

Until 2000, the 41st Fighter Aviation Regiment operated at the Malbork Airport, operating MiG-21 aircraft. On January 1, 2001, the 22nd Air Base (Unit 1128) and the 41st Tactical Aviation Squadron were established on the basis of the 41st Fighter Aviation Regiment. 22. The base was subordinated to the 2nd Air Defense Corps.

In 2002, by decision of the Ministry of National Defense No. 121/MON of May 8, 2002, the unit's holiday was set on April 22. Also in 2002, a commemorative badge of the 21st Air Base was established (Decision No. 200/MON of July 16, 2002). On April 27, 2002, the unit was presented with a banner.

In 2002, the unit was threatened with liquidation due to the withdrawal of MiG-21 aircraft from service. Because MiG-29 (Ex-GDR) planes were obtained from the Federal Republic of Germany, and after their renovation in Bydgoszcz, the planes were transferred to Malbork.

In 2006, the 22nd Base was subordinated to the 1st Tactical Aviation Brigade with headquarters in Świdwin. In 2009, the 22nd Base was subordinated to the 1st Tactical Aviation Wing.

The 22nd Air Base, by decision of the Ministry of National Defense No. 264/MON of June 30, 2006, inherited the traditions of: 1. Air Division (1944), 4. Mixed Air Division (1944-1945), 1. Pomeranian Mixed Air Division (1945-1946), 9th Fighter Aviation Division (1952-1967), Pomeranian Fighter Aviation Division (1967-1991).

Commanders of the 22nd Air Base:

Colonel pilot Eugeniusz Gardas (January 1, 2001 - July 3, 2007). Colonel pilot Robert Dziadczykowski (July 3, 2007 – December 31, 2010).
